Parish News
Pastor’s Note:

Welcome Sister Margaret Paul
The new principal at Saint Laurence School,
Sister Margaret Paul, I. H. M., belongs to the
Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
and now lives in the convent with the sisters who
minister to Saint Laurence Parish.
Sister Margaret was born and raised in Buffalo, New York,
and is the oldest of three children. Sister attended
Bishop O’ Connell High School when the family moved
to Arlington, Virginia. It was there that Sister Margaret
was inspired to enter religious life. She entered the convent
after graduating high school. After professing her vows,
she was missioned at several schools in Philadelphia, in
Delaware County, and in the states of Virginia and Florida, totaling a eaching career of over 38 years and 5 years of administration. Most recently, sister was the Vice-Principal
of the grade school that was her home parish in Virginia.
Sister Margaret finds joy in the smiling faces of children and
looks forward to her years of service to the children here at
Saint Laurence. She welcomes the challenge of being
a Catholic Elementary school principal and
“looks forward to meeting new people and sharing
the Good News of Jesus on a daily basis.” Welcome, Sister Margaret Paul.

“We get the public officials we deserve. Their virtue or lack thereof, is a judgment not only on them, but on us. Because of this, we urge our fellow citizens to see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically, and to choose their political leaders according to principle,
not party affiliation or mere self-interest.”

Please Help Us by Joining the
“Bucks for Boiler” Campaign
In June 2010, I publicly announced to the parishioners at each Mass the need for a new boiler. The boiler under concern provides heat to the church, school and social hall.
The company that manufactured the present boiler is now out of business. The necessary parts for repair are most sparse. Engineers of four different companies offered their opinion. Four fellow parishioners who are quite knowledgeable and not shy were my back up. We aired the concerns and problems. Their conclusions were similar and all agreed that this boiler owes us nothing.
This boiler has seen many years and has functioned well because it was properly maintained. Secondly, I have no desire to throw good money after bad. Finally, would this boiler last another winter season? It most likely would, but not without serious risk. I do not believe that the risk makes any sense. Therefore we are going ahead. Available photographs give a glimpse into the reality.
Where is the boiler?
It is right under the statue of Saint Laurence, how appropriate.
(Evidence also reveals the shoots for coal delivery.)
What fuel is used to fire-up the boiler? Natural gas.
We discussed the installation of two boilers, one for church and one for school.
What is taking place?
We have contracted to install one boiler to service the church, school and social hall.
Efficiency? The present boiler is said to have worked at 35% efficiency. The new boiler will function at a said efficiency of 82%. In time, the savings will be significant.
The cost per household of the parish and school is $70.00 at 100% participation.
The cost will include...
-
removal of the present boiler
-
removal of an even older, non-functioning boiler from 1945 that had been legally wrapped and sealed because of interior asbestos
-
removal of old oil piping
-
removal of technologies that are obsolete
-
legal and proper removal of all construction materials: metals, wiring, castings and containers
-
installation of one new boiler
-
installation of properly zoned areas for church, school and the social hall

Click on the picture above to view the removal of the boiler on June 22,2010.

SCRIP
Don’t forget to keep buying scrip this summer!
SUMMER HOURS: Scrip is sold before and after Masses on Saturday night and Sunday mornings in the Tower and in the Rectory from 7 - 8 p.m. on Thursdays.
Saint Laurence Scrip will be piloting a program this year
(2010-2011) to include Catholic colleges and universities in the type of schools covered by the tuition vouchers earned by parents, grandparents and friends when they purchase gift cards. Currently, vouchers received for purchasing scrip can be used for tuition at St. Laurence School, for St. Laurence CYO or CCD fees, and at other Catholic elementary or secondary schools.
In order to obtain credit, please note the following guidelines.
For tuition at St. Laurence School, submit the
vouchers with your tuition payments.
For Catholic schools other that St. Laurence, including colleges and universities, high schools, and other elementary schools, the process is a little different. These checks are written twice a month and will be mailed directly to the schools. Please provide the student’s name and identification number with the vouchers you submit, along with your name and phone number. Vouchers should be submitted to Dawn Burdsall, St. Laurence Scrip Treasurer. Send the vouchers to Dawn’s attention either to the rectory or to school. Please note that it may take at least two weeks to process vouchers once they are submitted. Please allow at least this amount of time when dropping off your vouchers. NEW: Pilot program for using Scrip for Catholic colleges and universities will start summer 2010!

Pray Always, Rejoice Always
The Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, are a religious Congregation of women, dedicated to the ministry of education.
Camilla Hall is the Congregation’s convent home for our many aging and infirm Sisters who have been retired from active classroom duties. It is also the facility where hospitalized IHM’s recuperate before returning to their apostolate in one of our missions in either North or South America. Camilla Hall is, above all, the “IHM Powerhouse of Prayer” where those enrolled in the IHM Spiritual Treasury are prayed for daily before the Most Blessed Sacrament. In addition, their intentions are remembered in the daily Masses, prayers and apostolic works of
all the Sisters.
